Biopharma IP Issues in Emerging Markets: Brazil and India
Newark, January, 2012 - The NJIPLA was pleased to host the first of a series of CLE programs dedicated to biopharma IP issues in emerging markets, at the Newark Club on January 18th.
Over the next five years, the biggest area of growth for biopharma products is expected to be in emerging market countries, including the "BRIC" countries of Brazil, Russia, India and China. To help biopharma IP practitioners in the NY/Philadelphia corridor prepare for this new era, the NJIPLA plans to sponsor an annual CLE series that will highlight hot IP issues in emerging markets of particular interest for the biopharma industry.
Rajita Sharma of Finers Stephens Innocent LLP provided updates on a variety of topics, including Sections 3(d) and 3(e) of the Indian Patent Act: Court and Patent Office interpretations and their implications for patenting biopharma invention. Attorneys João Luis Vianna and Gabriel Leonardos of Momsen, Leonardos & Cia presented information on several topics including views of the Brazilian Patent Office on patentability of selection inventions, polymorphs, and 2nd medical uses as well as ANVISA's role in examining biopharma patent applications.
This program was approved for 2.0 CLE credits in NJ and 1.5 CLE credits in PA.
25th Annual Pharmaceutical / Chemical Patent Practice Update
Woodbridge, December, 2011 - The 25th Annual Pharmaceutical / Chemical Patent Practice Update was held on Wednesday, December 7th at the Woodbridge Hilton from Noon - 5:30 p.m. Teresa Stanek Rea, Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Deputy Director, United States Patent and Trademark Office, delivered the Headline Address AIA/Patent Reform; Implications for Pharmaceutical Patents. Attendees earned 4.5 NJ/NY CLE (including 1.0 Ethics credit) and 4.0 PA CLE (including 1.0 Ethics credit).
Electronics, Telecom and Software Patent Practice Update
New Brunswick, November, 2011 - Over 90 intellectual property attorneys, in-house counsel and members of the judiciary participated in NJIPLA Electronics, Telecom and Software Patent Practice Update on November 9, 2011. This CLE program was the first of its kind in the New York metro area, featuring talks and panels concerning recent changes in the law affecting electrical, telecom and computer inventions and the patent prosecution and litigation practice relating to those inventions.
“We were delighted to provide a comprehensive program to educate intellectual property attorneys about the latest developments in the electronics, telecom and software sectors," said Mark J. Abate, partner in Goodwin Procter's Patent Litigation Practice who helped organize the program. "The NJIPLA is committed to offering its members in New Jersey, New York City and Philadelphia a robust platform to share ideas and keep informed about the impact of new legislation and rulings in the patent litigation field."
This program, offering 4.5 CLE credits in New Jersey & 4.0 CLE credits in New York and Pennsylvania, included such presentations as: The Prosecution of Patent Applications in the Electrical Arts, Electrical, Telecom and Software Patent Law Update and Litigation of Electrical, Telecom and Software Patents Before the USITC. Guest speakers included James Dwyer, Assistant Deputy Commissioner, Computer Architecture, Software, Networking and Multiplex Communications Arts, USPTO and the Honorable Robert K Rogers, Jr., Administrative Law Judge, USITC.
Ninth Annual Fall Lecture Series
Newark, October, 2011 - The Gibbons Institute of Law, Science Technology, Seton Hall University School of Law and the NJIPLA were pleased to present the Ninth Annual Fall Lecture Series, Tuesday, October 25th. The Honorable Joel Pisano, District Court Judge, United States District Court for the District of New Jersey discussed What's Left of "Inequitable Conduct" After Therasense, and the Standard of Proof for Obviousness following Microsoft v i4i: Observations from the Bench. Attendees earned 1.0 NJ/NY CLE.
The Patent Law and Pharmaceuticals Symposium 2011
Newark, October, 2011 - The Patent Law and Pharmaceuticals Symposium 2011 took place on Wednesday, October 12th. Leaders of the judiciary, academy, private practice, business, and government considered some of the top issues in IP law affecting the pharmaceutical and biomedical industries. Attendees earned 5.0 NJ/NY and 4.0 PA CLE. This event was cosponsored by Paul Weiss, Rutgers Institute for Professional Education, Rutgers School of Law – Newark and the NJIPLA .
2011 Jefferson Medalist - Herbert C. Wamsley
Short Hills, June 2011 - NJIPLA was pleased to recognize Herbert C. Wamsley, Executive Director of the Intellectual Property Owners Association, as the 2011 Jefferson Medalist. In a 60 year tradition, the NJIPLA annually presents the Jefferson Medal to someone who has made exceptional contributions to the field of intellectual property law. Mr. Wamsley was presented with the Jefferson Medal on June 3, 2011 at the annual Jefferson Medal Dinner at The Hilton at Short Hills.
David Kappos and Q. Todd Dickinson Speak at February Event
Newark, February, 2011 - David Kappos, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), fielded questions from Q. Todd Dickinson and the audience of patent practitioners who attended NJIPLA’s February event in a talk show like format. Mr. Dickinson, who is a former USPTO Director and current Executive Director of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, took the role of talk show host, presenting questions pertinent to the evening’s topic of The Future of America’s Innovation Economy: Progress and Challenges at the USPTO. Gibbons Institute of Law, Science & Technology, and Seton Hall University School of Law, cosponsored this event along with NJIPLA.
Chief Patent Counsel Roundtable and Honorable William G. Young's Keynote Address Help Make 24th Annual PCPPU a Success
Woodbridge, December, 2010 - The NJIPLA is proud to announce that over 100 intellectual property professionals attended its 24th Annual Pharmaceutical / Chemical Patent Practice Update, held December 8, 2010. The Honorable William G. Young of The United States District Court For the District of Massachusetts delivered the Keynote Address. A wide range of intellectual property topics affecting the pharmaceutical and chemical industries were presented by Professor Michael Carrier of Rutgers Law, Timothy Witkowski of Boehringer Ingleheim, Thomas Hoffman of Novartis, and Robert Schulman of Hunton & Williams.
